Today is a special day….it is a day when everything will go your way!

June 24th was a great day is history. This day is marked with several momentous events:

  • June 24, 1509—Henry VIII crowned king of England.
  • June 24, 1884—John Lynch is 1st black elected chairman of the Republican convention.
  • June 24, 1894—Decision to hold modern Olympics every 4 years.
  • June 24, 1947—Jackie Robinson steals home for 1st of 19 times in his career.
  • June 24, 2011 Roswell Lawrence, Jr. celebrates his birthday!!!!

With much planning and stealth, we celebrated Roswell’s 30th Birthday with a surprise party at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen. Thank you to all those that came out. I showered my husband with thirty gifts to mark this momentous occasion! He was really surprised. Here’s to many, many more birthdays!!!!

Did you know that birthdays are healthy for you? Research shows,

Wham, Bam, Thank you Mam!

Black women. We’re strong. We’re sexy. We’re inspiring. We’re smart. However the media is doing a horrible job of illuminating these qualities in us. I know, most, if not all of us are Sex and the City fans—strong, independent, successful, single and dating. One is a successful author, one is a lawyer, one a publicist, and the last one is a successful art curator. Their jobs and fashion are unremarkable. Can black women be viewed in the same manner and still have a stunningly successful show?

It’s been quite sometime since Girlfriends has been on the air, but this show was our Sex and the City. A lawyer, a real estate agent, an author, and an over-educated hippie. They were classy, sexy, single, and looking for love. Where are the Girlfriends of today? We are bombarded today by the likes of Basketball Wives (where no one is actually married to a basketball player), the Real Housewives of Atlanta, the obnoxious baby mama in Tyler Perry’s latest film, and the newest show, Single Ladies. While these shows don’t exactly show us in the best light, we watch them because, Yes, they are entertaining. I must admit that I do love RHOA!!!!

Single Ladies
, advertised as the Girlfriends meets Sex and the City, is nothing of the sorts, at least from what I’ve seen. The ladies are sexy, single, and shady! One is an aspiring fashion mogul—ok. One is an ex-video dancer, conning men—hmmm. The last is a happily married woman who just happens to be cheating on her husband—shady. The show has a great deal of Black Star Power so it should be a good watch. As it concerns my take on the show, well the final verdict isn’t in yet. I’ll give the show a fair and unbiased analysis prior to judgment. Check out Single Ladies, Monday nights at 9pm on VH1. Let me know what you think!
